What Ferrets Eat - Good Ferret Diets

Ferrets like most other animals like meat, they are an obligate carnivore (meat eater). So introducing meat into your ferrets diet is crucial. But there are some different guidelines you need to follow to keep your ferret healthy and happy.
First of all, what ferrets eat can become a problem for you as an owner, if your ferret has been served the same brand or type of food it's entire life, you might find it tricky to make it eat another brand. The only play you have here is to slowly introduce some other tastes by mixing it in with your ferrets normal diet. Be sure to keep an eye on how it goes, ferrets are very stubborn so don't be surprised if they won't eat at all, no matter how hungry they are.
When it comes to what your ferret eat it's always smart to serve the portions in two small doses a day, ferrets are small, and have a very delicate digestive system, so make sure they don't overeat. The diet should also be dry, you can give it moist food, but if this lies out, uneaten too long, your ferret can get sick if they finally eat it. A good rule is not to let the moist food stay uneaten for more than half an hour. Last but not least; the food should be high class brand, no basic cat or dog food, it should be premium ferret food preferably. Premium dog food has also been accepted as they have a good source of nutrients.
A good ferret diet consist of a high source of energy, much protein, calories contained in the form of fat and a little fiber. Ferrets can die or get very sick from malnutrition; for instance if you only give them meat, or only dry basic dog food. There are also some small items you might think was okay to use as treats, but you must not feed your ferret: Chocolate, normal milk, fruits, candy, nuts and nut products. If you need to give your ferret a treat, when training for instance, small pieces of meat or cocked eggs can work well. There have of course been some reported ferret deaths due to malnutrition, but you shouldn't be alarmed about that. If you follow the guidelines above, and understand that your ferret can't eat like humans do, you'll be okay. Remember ferrets have been in the wild for a long time, so a good meat based product will keep your ferret happy.
